Typography: Ligature

19 Nov Typography: Ligature

We put great value on typography and from time to time proffer some explanations, definitions and understanding of the rules…

Ligature

d29-ligatured29-ligature2Two or more letters connected to form a single visual character.  This is essentially decorative… and the embellishment that connects the two letters is known as a gadzook.

Some typefaces include ligatures within the font suitcase, whilst others naturally lead the designer into custom adaptation. Of course freehand lettering, often calligraphic, facilitates all manner of embellishment with as much flourish as desired!
